Correct pressure affects more than rolling resistance. It influences comfort, steering, braking, tyre wear and how confidently the wheelchair handles slopes, uneven paths and day-to-day transfers. For self-propelled users especially, a small drop in pressure can make every push noticeably more demanding.
Why wheelchair tyre pressure matters
Pneumatic tyres work by holding air inside a tube or tubeless casing. That air supports the rider and chair, helps absorb vibration and lets the tyre maintain its intended shape. When pressure is too low, the tyre squashes more against the ground. The result is greater drag, heavier steering and a higher chance of a pinch flat, where the tube is trapped between the rim and an obstacle.
Low pressure can also make a wheelchair feel unstable in turns. The tyre sidewall flexes more, so the chair may respond less predictably when changing direction. On an active wheelchair, this can affect camber and tracking. On an attendant-propelled chair, carers may notice that pushing requires more effort and kerbs are harder to manage.
Overinflation has its own trade-off. A very hard tyre can transmit more bumps through the frame and seating system, reducing ride comfort. It may have less grip on wet surfaces, loose gravel or polished indoor floors. Pressure above the tyre's stated maximum can also damage the tube or tyre and should never be used to make a chair roll faster.
The right setting is not a universal number. It depends on the tyre model, tyre width, user weight, wheelchair configuration and surface conditions. The pressure range marked on the tyre sidewall is the starting point that matters most.
Wheelchair tyre pressure guide: finding the right range
Look closely at the sidewall of each pneumatic tyre. You will usually find a recommended pressure range shown in PSI, kPa or bar. For example, a tyre might state 65-100 PSI. Stay within that stated range, even if another wheelchair has similar-looking tyres.
If the tyre gives a range rather than one figure, the best point within it depends on use. A pressure closer to the upper end generally reduces rolling resistance on smooth, hard surfaces. It can suit an active user who prioritises efficient propulsion, provided the ride remains comfortable and the tyre is rated for it. A pressure closer to the middle or lower end may offer more cushioning and grip, but it should still be high enough to prevent excessive tyre flex.
Body weight and carried items matter too. A wheelchair with a heavier user, seating accessories, power assist or loaded bag puts more demand on tyres. Do not exceed the maximum printed pressure to compensate. Instead, check that the tyres, tubes, wheels and chair configuration are appropriate for the load. Front castors are often solid or polyurethane, but some wheelchairs use pneumatic front tyres as well. Check these separately. Their pressure requirements may differ from the rear wheels, and uneven front tyre pressure can contribute to tracking problems.

Australian tyre gauges may show PSI and kPa, while some wheelchair tyres use bar. As a rough guide, 1 bar equals about 100 kPa or 14.5 PSI. Use the same unit shown on your gauge where possible, rather than relying on mental conversions.
A quality hand pump with an accurate gauge is a practical maintenance item for any wheelchair with pneumatic tyres. A floor pump is usually easier for home use, while a compact hand pump can be useful when travelling. Make sure the pump head suits the valve type fitted to your tubes, most commonly Schrader or Presta.
How to check and inflate wheelchair tyres
Check tyre pressure when the wheelchair has been sitting for a short time and the tyres are cool. Heat can temporarily increase the reading. Park on level ground, engage the brakes and keep fingers clear of spokes and moving wheel parts.
Remove the valve cap, press the gauge firmly onto the valve and read the pressure. If it is below the preferred pressure within the sidewall range, attach the pump and add air in short bursts. Recheck frequently. It is easier to add a little more air than to correct an overfilled tyre.
Once the pressure is correct, refit the valve cap. The cap does not hold air in by itself, but it helps keep dust and moisture out of the valve. Repeat the process on the other side. Rear tyres should normally be matched closely to help the wheelchair travel straight and brake evenly.
Do not judge pressure only by squeezing the tyre with your hand. High-pressure wheelchair tyres can feel firm even when they are significantly underinflated. A gauge gives a reliable reading and takes only a moment to use.
How often should you check wheelchair tyre pressure?
For regular wheelchair use, a weekly pressure check is a sensible routine. Check more often if you travel long distances, use rough footpaths, frequently negotiate kerbs, or notice the chair rolling differently. Before a full day out, a holiday, sports session or important appointment, it is worth doing a quick check.
Tyres naturally lose a small amount of air over time, particularly narrow high-pressure tyres. A tyre that needs topping up occasionally is not necessarily faulty. However, a tyre that goes soft again within a day or two should be inspected for a puncture, loose valve core, damaged tube or worn tyre.
A simple visual inspection can prevent inconvenient problems. Look for embedded glass or thorns, cracks in the rubber, bald patches, bulges, exposed casing and cuts near the bead. Check that the tyre is seated evenly around the rim. If it has slipped or is visibly distorted, deflate it and have it refitted correctly before use.
When pressure is not the real problem
Inflating a tyre will not solve every rolling or steering issue. If the wheelchair pulls to one side despite equal pressures, check for a dragging brake, hair around a castor, worn bearings, a bent axle, damaged fork or uneven tyre wear. A chair that is difficult to propel may also need adjustment rather than more air.
Likewise, repeated punctures can point to a worn tyre or a foreign object still lodged in the tread. Replacing only the tube may provide a short-term fix, but a damaged tyre can puncture the new tube as well. Inspect the inside of the tyre carefully when changing a tube, and replace the tyre if its casing or tread is compromised.
Solid tyres and puncture-proof inserts do not require inflation. They can be practical for users who want minimal tyre maintenance or frequently encounter puncture hazards. The trade-off is usually a firmer ride and, depending on the setup, more rolling resistance. Pneumatic tyres remain a popular choice because they offer a comfortable, efficient ride when maintained properly.
Signs you should stop and inspect the tyre
Stop using the wheelchair until it has been checked if there is a sudden loss of pressure, a bulging tyre, a split sidewall, a wheel wobble, or a tyre rubbing against the frame or brake. Continuing to travel on a flat pneumatic tyre can damage the tube, tyre and rim. It can also make transfers and braking less secure.
If you are replacing a tyre or tube, match the marked size exactly and confirm compatibility with the rim and valve type. Wheelchair parts can look similar while using different sizes. Keeping the tyre's sidewall details and a photo of the valve handy makes ordering replacement parts simpler.
A few minutes spent checking pressure can make a meaningful difference to comfort, effort and reliability. Build the check into your weekly wheelchair care routine, and ask for help when a tyre is losing air, wearing unevenly or no longer performing as it should.
