They are the boards that suit the user’s transfer technique, the height and layout of their furniture, and the support available from a carer.
For wheelchair users, families and support workers, choosing a board is about more than bridging a gap. It is about reducing strain, protecting skin, preserving independence and making everyday moves between a wheelchair, bed, toilet, shower chair or lounge safer to manage.
What a transfer board is designed to do
A transfer board creates a firm bridge between two surfaces. Rather than standing for a pivot transfer, the user moves across the board in small stages, usually by lifting, sliding or using a transfer aid. This can be helpful for people with limited lower-limb strength, reduced balance or a condition that makes standing transfers unreliable.
A board is not a substitute for correct setup or hands-on assistance where it is needed. The wheelchair and destination surface must be stable, close enough together and at a manageable height. Wheelchair brakes should be applied, footplates moved away where possible, and loose rugs or clutter removed from the transfer area.
The right board also depends on whether the user can reposition their hips, use their arms effectively and follow the steps of a transfer. If transfers have become difficult, painful or unpredictable, an occupational therapist or physiotherapist can assess technique and recommend appropriate equipment.

Most home transfer boards fall into a few practical categories. Each has a place, but each also involves trade-offs.
Straight wooden transfer boards

Timber boards tend to offer a smooth, firm surface and can be easier to slide across when used with suitable clothing or a slide sheet. They are often a good choice where there is a simple, direct gap between surfaces.
Look for rounded, tapered ends that can sit securely under the user’s thigh or against the receiving surface. A board that is too short may not provide enough overlap, while an unnecessarily long board can be harder to position in a tight bedroom or bathroom.
Wood requires basic care. Keep it dry, inspect it for chips or splinters, and replace it if the surface becomes rough, cracked or worn. A rough board can catch clothing and increase friction on vulnerable skin.
Curved transfer boards
Curved boards are useful where a straight line is not possible. For example, the wheelchair may need to sit at an angle beside a bed, lounge chair or toilet because of room layout, armrests or other furniture. The curved shape allows a more natural arc from one surface to another.
This style can improve access in smaller spaces, but it needs careful placement. The board still needs adequate contact at both ends, and the curve should match the direction of travel. Sliding boards, sometimes called glide boards, include a moving seat or disc that travels along a fixed base. The user remains seated on the moving component while it glides from one side to the other. This can reduce the effort required to move across the board and may lower shear forces compared with repeated lifting and shuffling.
They can be particularly helpful for users with limited upper-body strength or those who need a more controlled transfer. The trade-off is that sliding boards are generally bulkier and require enough clear space for setup. They may also be less convenient for occasional transfers away from home.
Choosing the right length, width and weight rating
Measurements matter. A board needs to bridge the gap with enough contact on each surface to remain supported throughout the transfer. The required length varies with the location and transfer angle, so measure the usual setup rather than guessing.
Width affects comfort and stability. A wider board may offer more support for a larger user or someone who needs room to reposition, while a narrower board may be easier to manage in confined spaces. Thickness and edge shape also affect how easily the board can be placed beneath the user.
Always check the manufacturer’s stated weight rating. That rating should suit the user and the forces involved in their transfer, not just their body weight in isolation. Do not use a board with visible damage, bending, deep scratches or worn anti-slip surfaces, even if it appears to be within its original capacity.
For a person using a pressure cushion, seat height can change significantly once they leave the wheelchair. A height difference that looks small can make a transfer harder, especially when moving uphill onto a bed or chair. In some cases, adjusting furniture height or using an appropriate cushion setup makes more difference than changing the board itself.
Home setup matters as much as the board
The same transfer board can work well in one room and poorly in another. Before choosing, consider the places where it will be used most often: beside the bed, at the toilet, in the bathroom, at a favourite chair or when transferring into a vehicle.
A transfer is generally easier when the destination surface is level with, or slightly lower than, the wheelchair seat. The wheelchair should be positioned close to the destination, usually at a slight angle, without creating an awkward twist through the shoulders. Remove or swing away armrests only when the wheelchair design allows it and it is safe to do so.
In bathrooms, space and water are the main challenges. Make sure there is enough room to position the wheelchair, board and any carer without working around a vanity, shower screen or narrow doorway. Clothing should be smooth where possible, and skin should be checked regularly if the person has reduced sensation or is at risk of pressure injuries.
Carers should avoid lifting the person by the arms or pulling them across the board. This can strain both the carer and the user, and may injure shoulders. A trained clinician can demonstrate safer assistance methods and advise whether a transfer belt, slide sheet, hoist or other equipment is more appropriate.
Take extra care if the user has pain, a recent injury, poor trunk control, significant spasms, dizziness or a history of falls during transfers. A transfer board may still be suitable, but only after the technique and equipment have been assessed. For some people, particularly where there is little ability to weight shift or assist with movement, a hoist can be the safer home solution.
